Implications of ASCOT and CARDS

Clinical trial evidence has established the benefit of lipid-regulating statin therapy in patients with elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), but in a growing number of patients, cardiovascular risk is increased by the presence of the metabolic syndrome, characterized by elevated triglycerides, low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), hypertension, and insulin resistance.
