Overview Guidelines to govern a clinician’s response to cardiovascular disease (CVD) and coronary artery disease (CAD) risk in his or her patient population have been evolving steadily since the Framingham Heart Study began to establish definitively 1) that there are specific risk factors associated with increased incidence of CVD and CAD and 2) that many of these risk factors can be modified. In this presentation, we review recent recommended modifications based on clinical trials, as well as specific risk factors and categories contributing to the assessment of global risk for CAD.
Goal To provide health-care professionals with an evidence-based overview of risk assessment and treatment of CAD in the US.
Target Audience Goals of Lipid-Lowering Therapy is intended for physicians, pharmacists, nurses, and nurse practitioners with an interest in dyslipidemia.
Learning Objectives Following completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Evaluate revised guidelines for cholesterol management and adjustments in therapeutic lipid goals based on information from recent clinical trials
- Define NCEP ATP III guidelines for estimating global risk for CAD
- Identify NCEP ATP III guidelines for diagnosis of metabolic syndrome and present defining levels for individual metabolic syndrome risk components
- Utilize CVD risk stratification and intervention thresholds developed for women
- Apply new CAD risk category classifications based on recent clinical trial implications and provide inclusion criteria for each
