The FCG Institute for Continuing Education and IntraMed Scientific Solutions gratefully acknowledge an educational grant from AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals LP in support of this continuing medical education activity.

Overview
There has been an increased interest over the last 30 years in high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels and their impact on health. Current clinical interest has focused on HDL-levels in the context of coronary artery disease (CAD) risk and risk reduction. There is also indication of other areas in which the effects of HDL are being investigated. An overview of the clinical observations, evaluations, and therapies associated with HDL and HDL-C levels will be reviewed.

Goal
To provide health-care professionals with an evidence-based clinical overview of the importance of HDL and HDL-C levels in cardiovascular health.

Target Audience
The Importance of High-Density Lipoprotein and High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol Levels in Cardiovascular Health: A Clinical Overview is intended for physicians, pharmacists, nurses and nurse practitioners with an interest in dyslipidemia.

Learning Objectives
Following completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

    • Define the relationship between high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and risk for coronary artery disease (CAD)
    • Determine the conditions/activities related to low HDL-C levels
    • Recognize the potential role of pharmacological interventions in raising HDL-C in high-risk patients
    • Apply the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Program III recommended therapeutic strategies to raise levels of HDL-C in individuals at risk for CAD
